I know it’s a big call, but the yakitori (and everything else) at Yakitori Yurippi is literally some of the best I’ve ever had.
It’s this little unassuming place that’s just opened on Falcon Street in Crows Nest. You might have missed it on your way through actually, but please take note next time you pass by! S., who’s spent a lot of time in Japan, immediately said it reminded her of all the little eateries in Tokyo. Not to mention the kind hospitality of Tin, the owner, who is super friendly and you can see him working behind the bar just as hard as all his employees!
Gotta say, we ate a lot. We started with some Mentai Potato Salad ($4.50) and Tofu Seafood Salad ($4.50), as well as some Mini Karaage ($4.50) which was a bit like popcorn chicken. How well priced are these dishes?! Sure, they’re not big but they’re also not small. I particularly loved the karaage, whereas I’d probably give the potato salad a miss.
Then onto the skewers. You can choose between sweet soy or salt for your yakitori, and each stick is priced at $2.90. Again, they’re not massive but I still think it’s a really, really good price. We had the standard Chicken thigh and shallot, Wagyu beef with homemade marinade ($4.50 as a special), Okra with bonito flakes and ponzu vinegar, and the pork jowl. We also had one each of the Chicken Meatball with 63 degree egg ($4.50) which is always super tasty. In fact, it reminded me of the meatball we had at Yardbird in Hong Kong, which is a pretty big compliment.
My personal highlight (not really food related, haha) was being asked what bowl I wanted my rice in. I absolutely LOVE owls so of course I got the owl bowl – how cute is it! Always good to have some rice ($2.90) for the 63 degree egg. We then ordered some more yakitori because…we could. Slow cooked ox tongue with miso sauce ($4.50) definitely gets my tick of approval, but the pork belly ($2.90) was a bit chewy.
Finally we (mostly me) couldn’t resist getting the Japanese omelette ($4.90) in its little rectangular form. It’s such a freaking cute way to eat omelette, don’t you think?
