On DS’s last night in London we decided to go all out at a nice Italian restaurant called Orso, recommended by a kind friend. The friendly, almost homely (how cute are the colourful plates!) atmosphere was most welcoming – quite different to some of the top end restaurants in Sydney that tend to have stuffy service and look down on people not dressed in designer gear. Located in the heart of Covent Garden, this is an ideal location for an intimate dinner for two or an evening out with the family.

  • What we ate:

We shared the Pappardelle with wild mushroom, parmesan and truffle oil (small £9.50/large £13.50) to begin with because that dish basically has all of our favourite ingredients! We then both went for meaty dishes as our mains. I have a weak spot for calf’s liver so if it’s on the menu, it basically rules out any other option for me! The pan fried thinly sliced calf’s liver with smoked pancetta, roast red onion and aged balsamic (£17.50) was an absolute delight. Just as you’re getting used to the liver’s taste, suddenly you’re hit with a piece of tasty pancetta! DS had the Slow roast crispy pork with apple sauce and sage potatoes (£16.50). He was totally satisfied with his meal!

For dessert we shared the flourless chocolate cake with mascarpone, which was highly recommended to us by a friend. Sometimes these cakes can really be too overwhelming, be it too bitter, too thick, too heavy or too crumbly. This was none of these. Bordering on mousse, it was a delicate way of ending our meal. Mascarpone is definitely a great alternative to whipped cream or ice cream!

The opening of MATTEO was very much anticipated in Double Bay. Not only did it mean the long vacant site of former Italian restaurant Limoncello was finally being filled (by another Italian, nonetheless!). It also meant that Orazio D’Elia’s (of Da Orazio fame) food was now […]
