The wonderfully named Fleetwood Macchiato can be found on the main strip of the small suburb of Erskineville in Sydney’s inner west. DS was excited because, as he put it, “I like macchiatos and Fleetwood Mac are great!” We went for an early lunch on a Wednesday – a good time to go to avoid the crowds (it’s not a big cafe) and enjoy a quick feed.
- What we ate:
The menu features all-day-breakfast-type food. DS and I both opted for eggs, in two different styles. I had the Smashed Egg Breakfast Roll with Avocado, Mustard Aioli, Sriracha, Pickles and Mushrooms ($12.50, or with ham for $14.50) and DS had the Herb and Black Olive Rolled Poached Eggs, Saffron Pickled Eschallot, Blood Orange Hollandaise ($16.50).
To be honest, the food was the surprising part of our eating experience. What looks like your typical, inner west neighbourhood cafe actually turned out to have breakfast food with a twist. Full marks to the food presentation (as seen in images above) – the combination of colours and the arrangement of DS’s poached eggs was unexpected and beautiful. We also didn’t expect the mix of Asian flavours – there’s some pickled ginger and chili sauce in my roll and the poached eggs tasted overwhelmingly citrusy. DS remained unsure about his choice but I was quite satisfied with my roll – the mushrooms were particularly tasty.
To accompany our meal DS sampled the macchiato (very pleasing) and I had a pot of chai tea, lovingly made with ginger and honey. If you want a change from your typical breakfast and cafe food – this is definitely the place to go!
